ACCESS ROADS TO EDMONTON

ious concern was expressed by the representatives of the Communities sur- ounding Edmonton, at the meeting of the ‘monton District Chambers of Commerce, neld at Leduc, on Monday the 9th day of September, A.D. 1963, over the complete ‘ack of co-operation by the City of Bd- sonton in providing decent access roads nto the City.

At the meeting attended by representat- ives of Leduc, St. Albert, Jasper Place and Edmonton, it was pointed out that while the City of Edmonton expects the residents of the surrounding areas to patronize City establishments, that no effort was made by the City to provide suitable access roads into the City. Representations have been made by St. Albert during the past several years to Edmonton, urging that the deplorable con dition of the portion of the St. Albert Trail lying inside the City Limits, be rectified but the only result has been a series of excuses for leaving the road vay in its present condition, which the St. Albert representative declares is highly dangerous because of the narrow~ ness and roughness of that portion of the road from 127th Street to the City limits where it joins the wide Provin~ cial Highway.

It was pointed out that residents South of the City and in Leduc area are forced to use 104th Street, which is also nar- row and congested, and that the access from the East is also so narrow that traffic becomes seriously congested, making it awkward for residents in that area to get into the City.

‘The Jasper Place representatives pointed out that all traffic from that area was forced to pass through a bottle-neck in getting into the City, and that all traf fic from the entire Southern portion of Jasper Place had to travel over a round about congested route, to reach the down town Edmonton and particularly the South side, and it was declared that a West end Bridge was a critical necessity for that entire community.

‘The meeting of the Council went on re~ cord as protesting the lack of action respecting adequate access roads and adopted a resolution that a brief be submitted to the Edmonton City Council in a further effort to obtain some ac- tion in this regard.

Community League In the long un are Self Supporting But there are Some that are not. | We would like to mention only one at this time. The Bridge Club. This is an all Adult Groupe With a men- | bership of between Thirty Five & Fifty | Members, The hall is used every Sunday | evening for three to Four Hrs. Last year they paid the Conmunity League tess than $2.00 per. Sunday. And for this all became menbers for a Pull year. Now is it any wonder ve ask for a small Grant. Now the Gazette Reporter has called the Coumunity Hall a Fire Trap, | Some People just Don't understand our | Conmunity efforts. | i i

The Board of Directors of the Conmunity League Thanks the St. Albert Gazette for this opportunity to try to straighten this up.

Ivan Brewster,

President, St. Albert Community League. ar Sir, The Other Last year, the St. ridge Club

approached the St. Albert Community League for the use of the basement once ‘a week for promoting bridge activities in our town. The agreement was that for the first year, the Bridge Club would pay at the most $2.00 rent per week to enable the Club to organize itself ond purchase equipment, although it was of- ferred rent free for thie tine which is not up until October. se were fortunate that the St. Albert Conmunity League war so broadminded as to accept our request which they considered would be of gener- al recreational benefit for our town. Mr. Brewster once used the Bridge Club as a good example, saying that it was the only Club in town whose members were all members of the Joumunity League. Normally this would mean that they are favoured over non-members in rental charges. Nevertheless, of the 40 even- ings that the Bridge Club used the base- ment, at least half of these nights, we had to clean the basement before we could start to play. Also, most of the time the kitchen was not open, although this was part of the agreement. Some- times the basement was in such a mess that even 62.00 was much too high.

Last Sunday again, the basement was in complete disorder; beer bottles, stale sandwiches complete with meat, papers, |

cigarette boxes and all kinds of dirt, were scattered all over the entire base- ment. It was at least 20 minutes befor we could start to play bridge. We know the Community League has had trouble finding the right caretaker, but we feel it is unfair that the Bridge Club should be singled out and the wrong impression given that we were receiving ‘proper facilities’ for less than $2.00. Bud Ahronson, President, St. Albert Bridge Club.
